
Former First Lady of Ghana, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has passed away at the Ridge Hospital in Accra at the age of 76.
Family sources confirmed that she died on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
Nana Konadu, the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was one of Ghana’s most influential political figures and a pioneering advocate for women’s rights and empowerment. She served as First Lady from 1979 to 2001 during her husband’s tenure in office.
In 2016, she made history by becoming the first woman to contest the presidency of Ghana under the National Democratic Party (NDP), a political movement she founded after leaving the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Throughout her career, Nana Konadu championed the cause of women and children through the 31st December Women’s Movement, which established hundreds of preschools across the country and empowered women economically and socially.
Born on November 17, 1948, in Cape Coast, she studied Art and Textiles at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and later obtained a diploma in Interior Design from the London College of Arts. She also pursued advanced training in management and development from institutions in Ghana and the United States.
Nana Konadu was widely respected for her strong leadership and dedication to gender equality. Her efforts contributed significantly to shaping women’s participation in Ghana’s political and socio-economic development.
