The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has appointed Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, the institution’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, as Interim Vice-Chancellor following a directive from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
The decision was reached at an emergency Governing Council meeting on September 24, 2025. In a notice signed by Registrar Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye, UCC confirmed its compliance with GTEC’s directive on the leadership transition.
“Accordingly, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, is to act in the interim,” the statement read.
The leadership change follows GTEC’s order to former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, to vacate his position for exceeding the constitutional retirement age of 60. In a letter dated September 19, 2025, GTEC cited Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution, the UCC Act (PNDCL 278), and the University’s statutes as the legal basis for its decision.
Although the matter is currently before the Cape Coast High Court, GTEC has directed that no substantive appointment be made until the case is resolved.
The Governing Council reassured the university community and stakeholders that academic and administrative activities remain stable and unaffected.
Prof. Aheto will lead UCC in the interim while the leadership issue is being addressed.
