The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has cautioned customers to avoid fraudsters demanding mobile money payments for services such as meter installation, replacement, or debt cancellation.

According to ECG, the company does not operate any mobile money account, and all legitimate payments must be made through its official digital platforms — the ECG PowerApp or shortcode *226#.

Ing. George Amoah, General Manager of ECG in the Ashanti West Region, revealed that fraudsters often impersonate ECG officials and contact customers via phone or social media, demanding money for services.

“Just last week, a customer was asked to pay GH¢900 for a meter and later an additional GH¢500 as an installation fee. In another case at Breman, an elderly man lost GH¢2,000 to fraudsters. These individuals disappear once the money is paid,” he explained.

He noted that fraudulent activities have been reported in Adum, Kokoben, Suame, Danyame, Abuakwa, and Ahinsan districts, with the perpetrators using mobile numbers such as 0531807230, 0508790801, 0543803302, and 0532752541.

Ing. Amoah emphasized that replacing faulty meters is free of charge and warned customers not to pay anyone claiming otherwise. He added that customers must complete their wiring with certified electricians, submit their forms to ECG, and pay the approved registration fee of GH¢100 before receiving a quotation via SMS.

He further assured the public that ECG now has adequate meters under its Loss Reduction Project, which is enhancing efficiency and improving service delivery.

The company is working closely with security agencies to track and arrest fraudsters and is urging customers to report any suspicious calls to the police or ECG offices.
