Voters in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region are heading to the polls today, Tuesday, September 2, 2025, to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of the incumbent, Ernest Kumi.
More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to take part in what has become a hotly contested race between the country’s two major political parties. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is fielding Bernard Bediako Baidoo, while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is represented by Solomon Kwame Asumadu.
Both candidates have staged intensive campaigns over the past weeks, drawing support from top party officials and national executives who have made high-profile visits to the constituency.
To ensure peace and order, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,500 personnel across Akwatia. The police have warned against electoral malpractices, voter intimidation and acts of violence, stressing that offenders will be dealt with according to the law.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has also assured constituents of a transparent, credible and efficient process. It says special arrangements have been made to ensure the timely delivery of voting materials, effective monitoring, and smooth collation of results.
The by-election has attracted significant national attention, with many viewing it as a crucial test of political strength between the NDC and NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.
