Liverpool have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign striker Alexander Isak for a British record fee of £125 million, according to BBC Sport.
The Sweden international is expected to undergo a medical on Monday before completing a six-year contract with the Reds. The deal ends weeks of negotiations after Liverpool’s initial £110m offer in August was rejected.
Isak’s transfer marks the club’s biggest signing of the summer and comes on the final day of the transfer window. The move follows Newcastle’s recent acquisition of striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart, seemingly paving the way for the 25-year-old’s departure.
The saga surrounding Isak intensified earlier this summer when he was left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia with what the club described as a “minor thigh injury.” During that period, he trained separately at his former club, Real Sociedad, while reports indicated his desire to explore a move away from St James’ Park.
Speculation deepened after Isak publicly stated that promises made to him had been “broken” and that his relationship with Newcastle “can’t continue.” He believed he would be allowed to leave if a major club submitted a suitable offer, although Newcastle denied making such commitments.
Isak has missed Newcastle’s opening three Premier League matches this season, including their 3-2 defeat to Liverpool at St James’ Park. With this deal, Liverpool secure their top attacking target, while Newcastle move forward without their star forward.
