The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared all 12 aspirants vying for the Tamale Central parliamentary seat to contest in the party’s primaries scheduled for September 6, 2025, at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale.
The announcement followed the conclusion of vetting on Sunday, August 31, by a panel chaired by NDC Deputy General Secretary, Lawyer Barbara Serwaa Asamoah. She commended the caliber of candidates and expressed confidence in the integrity of the process.
“I must say I’m really surprised at the caliber of people who picked nominations and were vetted today. We had professors, lawyers, doctors, diplomats, and more. The most refreshing part is that, for the first time in the history of Tamale Central, three competent women are part of the contest,” she noted.
She assured delegates and the public that the primaries would be transparent, adding that whoever emerges victorious would be well-positioned for parliament.
Several aspirants also shared their perspectives. Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof. Alidu Seidu, stressed the need for a dignified campaign, reminding aspirants of the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of the sitting MP. “The best way to honor his legacy is to campaign in a respectful and dignified manner,” he said.
Former Tamale Municipal Chief Executive, Abdul Hanan Gundadoo, raised concerns about what he described as interference by party executives, claiming non-members were being projected into the race.
Other aspirants expressed optimism about their chances. Civil engineer Dr. Aliu Abdul Hamid declared: “Amongst all the candidates, nobody beats me in this election. I’m going to win and win by a landslide.”
For Hajia Mulaika Sualisu, one of the three female contenders, the primaries represent an opportunity for women’s leadership in the constituency. She appealed to delegates, especially women, to rally behind her.
Meanwhile, Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John urged aspirants and their supporters to maintain unity and refrain from acts of violence, emphasizing the need for peace ahead of the September 6 contest.
