Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has formally filed his nomination to contest in the party’s upcoming flagbearer election scheduled for January 31, 2025.
Dr. Bawumia, who was accompanied by his wife, Samira Bawumia, stormed the NPP headquarters in Accra on Thursday, August 28, where hundreds of enthusiastic party supporters gathered to show solidarity. His arrival created a charged atmosphere, with chants and cheers filling the air as he submitted his forms.
The upcoming contest is expected to be fiercely competitive, with Dr. Bawumia set to battle his closest rival, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong. Other notable aspirants include former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong and Abetifi MP and former Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong, who have already filed their nominations.
Former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has also declared his interest and is expected to file his nomination later today to formalise his bid.
The January election is seen as a defining moment for the NPP as the party seeks strong leadership and internal unity to position itself ahead of the next general elections.
Meanwhile, party stalwart Francis Addai-Nimoh has withdrawn from the race, citing “unhealthy monetisation,” internal bias, and poor timing as his reasons for stepping aside.
