The United States government has donated women’s body armour worth over $1 million to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to support female participation in peacekeeping operations.
The donation was handed over by Chargé d’Affaires Rolf Olson alongside the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Gbentanu, at a ceremony that emphasized the importance of empowering female peacekeepers.
Designed specifically for women, the protective gear reflects U.S. support for Ghana’s long-standing role in international peacekeeping. Olson noted that the equipment would provide critical protection for Ghanaian soldiers serving on the front lines in West Africa and beyond.
The initiative forms part of the Women’s Body Armour Quadrilateral Pilot Project, launched in 2023 by Ghana, Zambia, the Netherlands, and the United States. Funded by the U.S. and the Netherlands, the project seeks to boost the safety and operational capacity of female personnel in peacekeeping missions.
Olson also extended condolences to Ghana over the recent military helicopter crash, describing the donation as both a symbol of friendship and a tribute to the fallen soldiers.
