The Central North Regional Police Command has successfully located and rescued Nana Professor Okogyeaman Ameyaw Dankwa Okokroko II, Chief of Assin Wurakese, following reports of his alleged abduction on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.
According to initial accounts, four unidentified men in military camouflage, wearing face masks and armed with weapons, stormed the Chief’s residence at Assin Nkukuasa around 5:30 a.m. and forcibly took him away. The incident caused panic among residents of the community.
Upon receiving the report, the Central North Regional Police swiftly dispatched a response team and activated intelligence units. Patrol teams were mobilised, and alerts were issued to checkpoints across the Central and Eastern Regions in a bid to track down the abductors.
The operation led to the interception of a Mitsubishi pickup truck with registration number GN-833-24 in Asamankese at about 9:05 a.m., with the Chief and four others on board. The group was subsequently detained at the orders of DCOP Abraham Acquaye, the Regional Police Commander.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, August 20, DCOP Acquaye clarified that the men who picked up the Chief were operatives from the National Security Secretariat. He explained that the Chief had been invited to assist with an ongoing national security investigation and was later handed over to a formal national security team around 6:30 p.m. on the same day.
He urged the public to remain calm, assuring that the matter is being handled professionally in the interest of public safety and national security.
Meanwhile, some residents of Assin Wurakese have criticised the manner in which the National Security operatives carried out the arrest, describing it as aggressive and unprofessional, sparking fear and unease within the community.
