A midnight fire has claimed the lives of two young men at a carpentry shop in Penkwasi, a suburb of Sunyani East in the Bono Region.

The victims, identified as Reagan Kofi Atuahene and Alhassan Sherif Majeed, were trapped inside the burning structure and unable to escape. Their remains have been deposited at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital morgue.

According to eyewitnesses, the blaze started around midnight. Three others who were also in the shop managed to escape after breaking the door open.

One of the survivors, Zakari Abdul Mali, recounted, “When we woke up, the entire place was filled with smoke. We were forced to open the door. Three of us escaped, but two couldn’t make it out.”

Rachel Duku, the brother of the shop owner, added that there were five young men sleeping inside at the time. “By the time I opened the door and stepped outside, the fire had already engulfed the shop,” he explained.

The Bono Region has so far recorded 158 fire outbreaks since the start of the year, raising concerns about fire safety.

Bono Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Cecil Risch Addo, confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the cause. “We are making progress and will present the facts to the public once established,” he assured.
