The Ghana Police Service has announced a series of road closures, traffic diversions, and parking arrangements in Accra ahead of the Inter-Denominational and Inter-Faith State Funeral for the victims of the recent military helicopter crash. The solemn ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Black Star Square on Friday, August 15, 2025.
In a statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, the measures are aimed at ensuring public safety and smooth traffic management during the event. Selected roads around the venue will be temporarily closed, and motorists will be directed to alternative routes to ease congestion.
The affected routes include 28th February Road from the CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction, Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street, and Castle Road from the AU area to the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light. Additionally, Starlet 91 Road will be closed at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.
Traffic from La, Labone, and Osu heading towards the Central Business District and the Ministries via the 28th February Road will be diverted through Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light to connect with Oxford Street. Motorists from Lokko Street and Osu towards Castle Road are advised to use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street, while traffic from the John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square will be rerouted onto Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre. Vehicles from AU Circle towards Castle Road through the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be diverted onto Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to link with Abdul Nasser Road in front of the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
The Police further announced that only vehicles with approved red VVIP windscreen stickers will be permitted to enter the Black Star Square arena. Several locations have been earmarked for parking, including the Black Star Square VVIP area, the forecourt of the State House, the International Conference Centre, Access Bank Car Park, Osu Cemetery Car Park, the Accra Sports Stadium Car Park, the Ministries area, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture Car Park, Marine Drive Football Park, and Afua Sutherland Car Park.
Authorities cautioned against unauthorized parking or blocking of roads, warning that towing and recovery trucks will be on standby to remove any abandoned, disabled, or wrongly parked vehicles in and around the event grounds.
The Police Service urged motorists and the general public to take note of the arrangements, plan their journeys accordingly, and cooperate with security agencies to ensure effective traffic management during the funeral.
