More than 30 cases of teenage pregnancy were recorded in Gomoa Ehyiam, located in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region, in 2024, sparking concerns over an alarming trend affecting several communities in the area.

Health officials say incidents occur almost every month, with other towns in the district also reporting increases. Senior midwife at Gomoa Ehyiam, Bernice Amoah, revealed that between 20 and 30 cases were documented last year.

While some pregnancies involve relationships between peers, officials report that some cases implicate adults including teachers.

Assemblyman for Gomoa Tarkwa, Ayuba Mustapha, cited economic hardship and lack of sustainable livelihoods as major drivers, adding that social gatherings such as festivals often coincide with spikes in teenage pregnancies. His view was supported by Kemor Mathilda, a midwife at the Gomoa Oguaa Clinic.

During the recent Gomoa Tarkwa Akwambo Festival, the Chief of Gomoa Tarkwa, Nana Atta Kwakwa Egyir VII, called for urgent government intervention. He urged the establishment of tertiary and vocational institutions in the area as a long-term solution. The Chief has also set up an educational fund and other initiatives to support the needy and curb the growing trend.
