
President John Dramani Mahama has conveyed deep sorrow over the death of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others who perished in a military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
Addressing the nation on the evening of August 7, President Mahama revealed that the tragedy was a personal blow, as he shared close relationships with several of the victims.
“This is a personal loss. I had a deep bond with many of them. The entire nation is in mourning,” he said, while offering condolences to the affected families and assuring them of national support.
He urged citizens to come together in unity and compassion during this difficult time.
“In this moment of grief, let us remember we are united by our shared humanity. Now is not the time for political division or speculation, but for strength, empathy, and solidarity,” Mahama emphasized.
The fatal crash occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District in the Ashanti Region, as the officials were headed to Obuasi for official duties. The helicopter went down under unexplained circumstances, claiming all eight lives on board.

Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
Earlier on Thursday, a flower-laying ceremony took place at the Ceremonial Gardens of Jubilee House, with dignitaries including President Mahama, Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, and grieving relatives in attendance.
In honour of the fallen, a three-day national mourning period has been declared while investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
