
In a move hailed as a significant boost to Ghana’s historical preservation, the British National Archives has officially handed over an authentic copy of the historic Bond of 1844 to the Parliament of Ghana.The presentation ceremony, held in Accra, saw the document delivered by Juliette Desplat, Head of International Affairs at the British National Archives, alongside Keith McMahon, Chargé d’Affaires at the British High Commission. Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin received the artifact on behalf of the legislature.Describing the moment as a “historic milestone,” Mr. Bagbin expressed deep gratitude to the British government, emphasizing the document’s relevance to Ghana’s legal and political evolution. He said the Bond of 1844 marked a critical turning point in Ghana’s colonial and constitutional journey.As part of ongoing efforts to safeguard Ghana’s national heritage, the Speaker revealed that a museum has been established within Parliament House. The newly acquired Bond copy will be exhibited there to promote public education and serve as a valuable historical reference.Signed between the British colonial government and several Fante chiefs, the Bond of 1844 granted the British judicial authority over local territories and secured key trade routes. It laid the groundwork for formal British colonial rule in the southern Gold Coast, shaping the future of the nation’s governance and legal systems.
