Three aspirants have officially picked nomination forms to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Akwatia constituency, following the vacancy created by the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament.
The contenders include former MP Henry Boakye, the current NDC Akwatia Constituency Secretary Bernard Bediako Baidoo, and Erasmus Koney Ali.
According to the party’s schedule, nominations close on Wednesday, July 30. All candidates will be vetted on Thursday, July 31, with balloting to follow immediately after. The primaries are set to take place on Monday, August 4, 2025.
The by-election has stirred political activity in Akwatia, with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) confirming Solomon Kwame Asumadu, CEO of Owuo Mining Company, as its candidate. The NPP said the selection was based on broad stakeholder consultations and a consensus decision, foregoing a competitive primary.
Rumours suggesting that the late MP’s widow, Mrs. Mavis Kumi, would be selected to contest the seat were dismissed by Eastern Regional NPP Chairman Jeff Konadu, who labelled such reports as “false and misleading.”
