Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has filed a 10 million Ghana Cedis defamation lawsuit against media personality Afia Schwarzenegger, describing her recent allegations against him as “false, malicious, and deliberately contrived.”
Filed on Wednesday, July 23, the suit challenges public claims made by Schwarzenegger, including accusations that Mr. Gyamfi has multiple girlfriends at the University of Ghana, and that he purchased cars and properties for them.
Reacting to the allegations, Mr. Gyamfi issued a firm denial, stating: “I have no girlfriend(s) at the University of Ghana and have not at any time purchased vehicles for any so-called girlfriends as claimed by the Defendant.”
He also dismissed assertions that he had bought properties in the United States for his wife or her supposed sister-in-law, insisting his wife does not even have a sister named “Vida” a key name mentioned by the Defendant. According to Mr. Gyamfi, a simple background check would have exposed the claims as fabrications.
He argued that the defamatory statements were made either with intent or in “unpardonably reckless disregard for the truth,” with the sole aim of damaging his public image. He described the portrayal of him as “morally depraved and without scruples,” asserting that the smear campaign has caused immense distress.
Mr. Gyamfi, also a prominent figure in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), noted that the fallout from the allegations has led to uncomfortable inquiries from friends, family, government officials, and members of the party both locally and abroad.
He stated that his legal action seeks not only to clear his name but to set a precedent that discourages future unfounded attacks on public officials and personalities.
