The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially secured a two-thirds majority in Ghana’s Parliament following the swearing-in of Ewurabena Aubynn as the new Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, according to Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga.
Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, July 22, after Aubynn took the oath of office, Ayariga described the development as a significant milestone in the party’s legislative journey. He emphasized that with the new majority, the NDC is now well-positioned to undertake critical constitutional and policy reforms aimed at national transformation.
“For the first time in a very long time, the NDC has two-thirds in this House,” Ayariga declared. “With this number, we can carry out significant constitutional reforms to make this country better. Ghanaians have given us all the numbers we need to reset Ghana.”
The NDC now controls 184 out of 275 seats in Parliament, bolstered further by the support of four independent MPs. The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds 86 seats.
Ayariga assured the nation that the NDC would use its parliamentary advantage responsibly and in line with the vision laid out by President John Dramani Mahama during his inauguration. “We will not abuse the majority given to us by Ghanaians. We will use it wisely and for the benefit of all,” he said.
The Ablekuma North seat was secured after a rerun in 19 polling stations due to electoral irregularities during the December 2024 general elections. Aubynn’s victory not only marked a personal triumph but also delivered a strategic boost to the NDC’s legislative clout.
With the two-thirds majority now in place, the NDC is expected to prioritize key reforms, including long-discussed amendments to Ghana’s 30-year-old Constitution.
