Ghana’s presidential jet remains grounded in France due to extensive technical issues, including severe corrosion in its fuel tanks and engine components, according to the Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, July 21, 2025, Dr. Boamah confirmed that the Dassault Falcon 900EX EASy, registered as 9G-EXE, has been out of service since March 11, 2025, and its return has been repeatedly delayed.

He described the condition of the aircraft as “sick,” stating that each scheduled return date has been extended without resolution. “It is sad to note that for some time now, whenever the president’s jet goes for either maintenance or overhaul, the date that is scheduled for it to return to Ghana keeps changing,” he said.

Though technicians have given a new expected date for its return, Dr. Boamah said he preferred not to disclose it, citing previous failed timelines.

The prolonged grounding of the presidential jet has sparked public debate about whether Ghana should invest in a new and more reliable aircraft for official presidential travel. While some argue that such a purchase would be financially imprudent amid economic challenges, others believe it is necessary to ensure efficient and dignified presidential mobility.

However, Dr. Boamah stressed that the current state of the jet does not warrant the frequent rental of expensive luxury aircraft for presidential use. “The truth is that the presidential jet is heavily corroded… However, that does not in any way justify hiring or renting luxurious aircraft persistently for presidential use,” he stated.

The government continues to assess options as repair efforts on the jet remain ongoing in France.
