Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has congratulated Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, following their qualification to the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Black Queens secured their place in the last four after a dramatic 4-2 victory over Algeria in a penalty shootout on July 19, 2025.
In a Facebook post, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang commended the team’s resilience and urged Ghanaians to rally behind them as they prepare to face Morocco in the semi-finals.
“A big congratulations to our Black Queens for their remarkable victory over Algeria to secure a spot in the Women’s AFCON semi-finals. As they prepare to face Morocco, we salute their resilience and urge them to keep pushing. The whole nation is behind you. The dream is alive,” she wrote.
Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan emerged as Ghana’s hero of the day, saving two penalties during the shootout to help the Black Queens reach the semi-finals for the first time in nine years.
Ghana started the match with high intensity and nearly took the lead in the first half through Stella Nyamekye, but her goal was disallowed after a VAR review. The team continued to dominate, with strong efforts from Doris Boaduwaa and Chantelle Hlorkah putting pressure on the Algerian defense.
In the second half, head coach Kim Lars Björkegren made key changes introducing Evelyn Badu for Nyamekye and later Princella Adubea for Princess Marfo. Badu came close to scoring the winner in the dying minutes of regulation time but missed a clear opportunity, sending the match into extra time and eventually penalties.
The Black Queens will now shift focus to their upcoming semi-final clash against host nation Morocco as they aim to reach the WAFCON final and chase their first continental title.
