President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate cancellation of all fuel allowances allocated to political appointees, as part of his administration’s broader austerity agenda to reduce public expenditure.

The directive, issued on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, through a statement signed by Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu, emphasizes the government’s intention to redirect public funds to critical priority areas.

“The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make,” the statement read, underscoring a commitment to lead by example amid Ghana’s current economic challenges.

This move follows several cost-cutting measures already rolled out by the Mahama government, including:

A reduction in the size of government through fewer ministerial and staff appointments.
The cancellation of satellite TV subscriptions at the Presidency and other public offices.

The decision also comes a day before the government’s controversial GH₵1.00 per litre fuel levy is set to take effect. The levy is aimed at supporting the Energy Ministry’s efforts to stabilize fuel supply for power generation.
