The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has officially commenced the payment of monthly allowances to all Assembly Members across Ghana, with each member receiving GH¢1,300 per month.
Announcing the move at a press conference on Monday, July 14, Sector Minister Ahmed Ibrahim described the initiative as a key component of the government’s broader “Resetting Ghana Agenda” aimed at strengthening grassroots governance.
According to the Minister, a total of GH¢23.6 million has already been disbursed to cover allowances for April and May. This follows the release of GH¢25 million by the Ministry of Finance, representing the first tranche of the GH¢100 million allocation earmarked in the 2025 Budget.
In total, 9,085 Assembly Members, both elected and appointed, are expected to benefit from the allowance.
“This is part of our effort to improve the working conditions of Assembly Members and empower them to effectively monitor and support the implementation of government policies and manifesto commitments at the local level,” Ahmed Ibrahim stated.
He emphasized that beyond the financial support, the allowance is also meant to strengthen local oversight and improve accountability in the execution of development projects.
