Kufuor Expresses Disappointment Over Being Sidelined by NPP

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed deep concern over what he describes as marginalisation by his own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The former statesman voiced his sentiments during a courtesy visit by flagbearer hopeful Bryan Acheampong, lamenting that he has been sidelined from major party affairs.

“I don’t understand why my own party, the NPP, has sidelined me,” Kufuor remarked, highlighting a growing sense of exclusion despite his pivotal role in shaping the party’s history and governance record.

Kufuor, who led Ghana from 2001 to 2008 and remains a respected voice within the political space, revealed that he was excluded from a recent meeting of the NPP National Council—one of the highest decision-making bodies of the party. He noted that such an omission reflects a broader disregard for the input and legacy of the party’s elder statesmen.

His concerns come at a time of heightened political tension within the NPP, as internal divisions deepen ahead of the 2028 general elections. The party is currently navigating intense competition over leadership positions, particularly the flagbearer slot, with several factions emerging and raising questions about party unity, inclusiveness, and respect for founding figures.

Kufuor’s comments have triggered reflection among party supporters and political observers, with many questioning the NPP’s handling of its internal dynamics and whether the party is doing enough to preserve its institutional memory and cohesion.
