Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has visited former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, following a violent assault on her during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.
The incident occurred at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station, one of 19 sites involved in the rerun organised by the Electoral Commission. The chaos erupted when a group of unidentified men stormed the centre, disrupting the voting process. Two journalists were also reportedly injured during the melee.
Hawa Koomson, who was assaulted during the disruption, shared a message of gratitude on Facebook after the visit by Dr. Bawumia.
“This morning, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his team visited me at my residence to check on my health after I was brutally assaulted by thugs during the Ablekuma North rerun,” she wrote. “My family and I are extremely grateful for this thoughtful gesture.”
Dr. Bawumia was joined by senior members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including former Suame MP Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Akuapem North MP Sammi Awuku, and Akosua Manu, the NPP’s 2024 parliamentary candidate for Adentan.
The Ablekuma North rerun was held to resolve a long-standing electoral dispute stemming from the December 2024 general elections. The violence that occurred during the rerun has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for stronger protections for political actors and journalists during elections.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
