Ningo-Prampram MP and Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, has fiercely criticised New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over his condemnation of violent disruptions that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11.
In a blunt social media post, the outspoken legislator told Dr. Bawumia to “shut up,” accusing him of hypocrisy for failing to speak out during the violence at the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in 2019.
“Someone should tell Bawumia to shut up. What did he say about Ayawaso West Wuogon in 2019?” Sam George wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
His comments were in reaction to Dr. Bawumia’s earlier statement urging President John Dramani Mahama and the current administration to ensure justice for victims of the chaos that unfolded at St. Peter’s Polling Station in Odorkor, one of the 19 centres involved in the rerun.
The violence saw armed men storm the polling centre, physically assaulting former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson, NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie, and several others. The incident led to widespread panic, a temporary suspension of voting, and renewed concerns over election-related security.
Speaking after the incident, Dr. Bawumia expressed outrage and called for the perpetrators to be prosecuted, warning that failure to act could embolden political violence.
“This will be a recipe for disaster if each political party raises its own army,” he said. “We will not forget what has happened. This is not the democracy we want to see.”
However, Sam George questioned the NPP leader’s moral authority to speak on the issue, highlighting what he described as selective outrage.
The Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in January 2019 was marred by brutal violence when masked security operatives assaulted voters and opposition members.
