The Ghana Police Service has taken swift action to interdict an officer who was captured on video assaulting a reporter during the parliamentary rerun at Ablekuma North.
In a press release issued on Friday, July 11, 2025, the Police said they had seen the viral footage of the incident, which occurred at the Church of Pentecost North Odorkor Polling 2 Station earlier in the day.
According to the statement signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Richmond Mensah on behalf of the Director of Public Affairs, the officer involved has been immediately withdrawn from election duty and subjected to internal disciplinary measures.
“The officer concerned has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North; and in line with internal disciplinary procedures, he has been interdicted and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation,” the statement said.
The Police also assured the public of a comprehensive probe into the matter, promising to keep the public informed of any further developments.
The action follows a complaint by GHOne TV journalist Agyekum Banahene, who said he was slapped by the officer after refusing to leave the polling station, despite having proper accreditation and being surrounded by other media personnel.
The assault has sparked public outcry and raised concerns about press freedom and the conduct of security personnel during elections. The journalist has indicated plans to file a formal complaint with the Accra Regional Police Command.
