Voters in the Ablekuma North Constituency are heading to the polls today, Friday, July 11, 2025, in a closely watched parliamentary rerun across 19 polling stations. The rerun seeks to resolve a prolonged electoral dispute that has left the constituency without a Member of Parliament since the general elections held in December 2024.
The controversy surrounding the parliamentary results stems from disagreements between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over results from 62 polling stations. While the Electoral Commission (EC) managed to collate results from 59 of them, concerns over irregularities and missing signatures in the remaining 19 triggered legal battles and calls for clarity.
A High Court ruling in January 2025 ordered the EC to complete the collation process. However, the Commission later determined that the only credible way forward was to rerun the polls in the disputed stations to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
In the lead-up to today’s vote, the NPP initially rejected the EC’s decision and declared a boycott of the rerun. The party maintained that its candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, had already won the seat with a narrow margin of 414 votes in the original election.
Despite the party’s official position, Akua Afriyie defied the boycott and confirmed her participation in the rerun. Backed by several party executives and loyal supporters, she stated her readiness to contest and expressed confidence in retaining the seat.
The opposition NDC, on the other hand, has thrown its full weight behind its candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn. Party officials insist that Aubynn was the legitimate winner of the December polls and have been campaigning actively across the constituency to ensure a strong voter turnout.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has assured the public of a transparent and credible election. Deputy EC Chair Dr. Bossman Asare affirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that Ablekuma North constituents are fairly represented in Parliament.
Security has been heightened across all 19 polling stations, with the Accra Regional Police Command deploying officers to maintain peace and order. Voters have been urged to comply with electoral rules and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
