President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a nine-member transitional management committee to oversee the official handover of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to the University of Ghana.
The move forms part of a strategic plan to align healthcare service delivery, academic training, and research under a unified governance structure.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on July 8, President Mahama said the transition aims to elevate UGMC into a world-class teaching hospital that will serve not only Ghana but the wider West African region.
“The next phase of our vision calls for the full integration of UGMC into the University of Ghana’s governance and operational structures. This is a strategic alignment designed to promote synergy between clinical service delivery, teaching, and research,” he stated.
President Mahama emphasized the importance of harmonising leadership, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration, and improving resource management to optimise the centre’s performance.
The committee, co-chaired by two distinguished Ghanaians, will oversee the process to ensure the effective transfer and integration of UGMC into the university’s operations.
Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, also pledged the institution’s full support.
“This is just the beginning of the process. We pledge our full support to the transition team. Whatever support logistics or otherwise that is needed, we will provide to ensure the smooth work of the committee,” she said.
The handover is expected to enhance the university’s role in medical training and research, while improving the delivery of quality healthcare services through UGMC.
