Parliament has been adjourned until Tuesday, July 8, following the sudden death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia.
The suspension of proceedings came after a formal request by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who broke the news to the House during Monday’s session. He described Kumi’s passing as a complete shock, noting that there had been no prior report of illness.
Kumi, who was elected in 2024 on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party, was often described by colleagues as energetic and deeply committed to his work in Parliament and to his constituents.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga supported the call for adjournment. The First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, granted the request, pausing all business in the House to honour the late legislator.
Tributes have started pouring in from fellow MPs, political leaders, and constituents, many of whom praised Kumi for his humility, dedication, and service to the people of Akwatia and Ghana.
