The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intercepted a major consignment of suspected cannabis at the Swissport Terminal in Accra, dealing a heavy blow to international drug trafficking efforts.
The operation, carried out on Friday, July 5, 2025, led to the seizure of 738 compressed parcels of suspected cannabis concealed in 40 boxes deceptively labeled as “assorted food items.” The illegal shipment was bound for the United Kingdom, reinforcing Ghana’s status as a key transit point for narcotics headed for Europe.
According to NACOC, the bust followed weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance. Two suspects were arrested at the scene and are assisting with investigations.
However, two other individuals, Lincoln Nii Okaija (born March 27, 1979) and Kate Davidson, alias “Esi,” remain at large. Authorities have declared them wanted and are urging the public to assist with information that could lead to their capture.
Cannabis continues to be one of Ghana’s most widely trafficked narcotics. NACOC’s 2022 report recorded the seizure of over 59,900 kg of illicit drugs—up sharply from 15,458 kg in 2021.
In a related operation on June 24, NACOC conducted a raid in Akyem Oda and Akroso in the Eastern Region, arresting 14 individuals for drug possession and trafficking. During the raid, three licensed chemical stores were shut down for unlawfully selling unregistered and controlled pharmaceuticals, including cannabis and codeine-laced cough syrups such as “red.”
Ghana continues to work closely with international partners, particularly the United Kingdom, through intelligence sharing, joint operations, and institutional strengthening to dismantle drug syndicates.
Under Ghanaian law (PNDCL 236), trafficking narcotics without authorization carries a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison.
NACOC has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating drug trafficking networks and is calling on the public to remain alert and report any suspicious drug-related activity to help safeguard national security and public health.
