The Lawra Municipality in the Upper West Region has been plunged into mourning following the death of its newly appointed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Alhaji Adam Muazu, who passed away in Accra after a short illness.

Family sources confirmed that the 53-year-old MCE had been battling a protracted illness before and after assuming office in April 2025. Despite seeking medical attention at several facilities across the country, his condition deteriorated, leading to his passing on Tuesday, June 24.

Alhaji Muazu’s death is a devastating blow to the Lawra community, still reeling from the recent tragedy in which seven students from Lawra Senior High School drowned in the Dikpe River, a tributary of the Black Volta. His last public engagement was during a visit to the school with members of the Upper West Regional Security Council to offer condolences to the affected families.

Prior to his appointment as MCE, Alhaji Muazu was deeply involved in politics and community development. He was the first Propaganda Secretary—now Communications Officer—of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Lawra Constituency. He also played a key role in two successful parliamentary campaigns for the current MP, Bede A. Ziedeng.

Alhaji Muazu is survived by three wives and seven children. His body is expected to be flown to Lawra via Wa today and will be buried in accordance with Islamic tradition.
