Four people, including three schoolchildren and a taxi driver, have died in a devastating road accident at Natwibuw on the Winneba-Apam highway in Ghana’s Central Region.
The accident occurred around 4:00 pm on Monday, June 23, when a Toyota Rav4 vehicle with registration number GN 5507-18 reportedly attempted a wrongful overtaking and collided head-on with a taxi cab, registered CR 748-20. The taxi was transporting students from Uncle Rich and St. Paul basic schools who were on their way home from school.
Eyewitnesses say the impact of the crash was severe, killing the taxi driver instantly. Emergency responders struggled for several minutes to extract his body from the mangled wreckage.
One of the students died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries later at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, bringing the death toll to four. Two other students who were also involved in the crash are currently receiving medical treatment at the same hospital.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns about reckless driving on Ghana’s highways, particularly involving wrongful overtaking, which has been a leading cause of road fatalities in recent years.
Police have commenced investigations into the crash, as residents and school authorities mourn the tragic loss of young lives.
