Iran launched a missile attack on the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on Monday in retaliation for recent US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites. The move, which marked a major escalation in the ongoing conflict, was described by Iran’s military as “devastating and powerful.”

Despite the intensity of the strike, Qatari Defence Minister reported that the country’s air defences intercepted the missiles, preventing casualties or damage. The US confirmed that no personnel were harmed in the attack.

According to regional sources, Iran had informed both the US and Qatar in advance through diplomatic channels. Qatar and Bahrain subsequently shut their airspaces as a precaution.

This strike follows the US bombing of Iran’s key nuclear facilities—Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz—using bunker-buster bombs, an operation undertaken alongside Israel. In response, Iran also hinted at disrupting oil shipments, but markets remained steady, with oil prices falling 4%.

The attack has triggered heightened military alerts across the Middle East. US bases in Iraq and Syria have activated defence systems amid concerns of further retaliation from Iran or allied militias.

Meanwhile, Israel intensified its campaign, targeting political and military infrastructure in Tehran, including the notorious Evin Prison. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz described the operation as one striking “regime targets and repression bodies.”

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to seek support, while Iran’s leadership faces growing internal pressure and succession talks amid health concerns over Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of catastrophic consequences if the conflict further escalates, as civilian tolls rise in both Iran and Israel
