Hamza Suhuyini, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, has identified former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) strongest candidate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, June 18, Suhuyini acknowledged Dr. Bawumia’s leadership potential, despite being a member of the opposition. He warned, however, that internal power struggles within the NPP could damage Bawumia’s chances and the party’s prospects for renewal.

“Whatever way you look at it, the early congress is more about control than transformation. That’s why I believe the current leadership is harming Dr. Bawumia’s chances,” Suhuyini noted.

He further stated that the Vice President stands out among all the contenders:
“Whether the congress is held today or next year, in all honesty, Dr. Bawumia is in a better position to lead the NPP.”

Suhuyini also cautioned Bawumia to remain focused and resist internal pressures that could derail his efforts to reform the party.

“He must learn useful lessons. He must not allow his handlers to ruin the responsibility that the party may entrust to him,” he said, adding that he would be “hugely surprised” if Bawumia is not elected flagbearer.

His comments follow the NPP’s announcement that its presidential primaries will be held on January 31, 2026, a decision finalized by the party’s National Council.
