Residents of the Ejisu Municipality in the Ashanti Region were left without electricity on Wednesday, June 11, after a snake triggered a shutdown at an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) substation.

According to a report by Citi News, the incident occurred at the Kwaso substation when the snake came into contact with a feeder and the ground, causing an automatic shutdown of the Akyawkrom 2 feeder line.

The ECG’s emergency response team acted swiftly, restoring power shortly after the disruption.

Collins Manu, Public Relations Officer for ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission, explained that wildlife continues to be a serious threat to power infrastructure.

“Wildlife, especially snakes and birds, continue to pose real threats to grid reliability,” he said.

He added that ECG is implementing several preventive measures, including installing snake guards, sealing cable entry points, clearing vegetation, and improving drainage systems around substations.

The General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. Peter K. Fletcher, called on the public to report any suspicious activity around power installations to support efforts in safeguarding infrastructure and ensuring reliable power supply.
