A reduction in data prices is expected by the end of the year, according to the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George. He made this announcement during an event in Accra to mark the 2025 World Telecommunications and Information Society Day, themed “Gender Equality in Digital Transformation.”
The Minister revealed that a committee, formed in February and comprising telecom companies, the National Communications Authority (NCA), and other key stakeholders, had developed a comprehensive roadmap to lower connectivity costs. Notably, the committee worked for 13 days without compensation from taxpayers.
“On the basis of that roadmap, I made the Director-General of the NCA and the regulator engage with stakeholders on immediate, medium- and long-term strategies,” Mr George said. “My promise to citizens is that by the end of this year, we will see data prices drop, and I remain committed to that.”
Addressing recent social media discussions that misinterpreted his earlier comments, he said, “People think data prices must be cheaper by the stroke of my pen. But I trust in the process and the technical expertise of the regulator to deliver sustainable solutions.”
To further strengthen efforts, the ministry has engaged the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to conduct an independent tariff study, expected to be completed in eight weeks. The findings will be reviewed alongside the NCA’s data to guide informed policy decisions.
Mr George emphasized that any decisions taken would prioritize both customer affordability and the sustainability of telecom investments. “I will not give directives that will affect the industry. I will consult with industry players to ensure both investor confidence and better service quality for users,” he added.
