Businessman and philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo has fulfilled a GHS500,000 pledge to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, reinforcing his commitment to improving healthcare access for vulnerable Ghanaians.
Presenting the cheque at the Ministry of Health, Agongo, founder of Alive Industries and former owner of the defunct Heritage Bank was stressed that the donation was motivated by compassion rather than wealth. “No Ghanaian should have to choose between life and basic survival,” he stated.
The donation comes at a time when the cost of dialysis in Ghana poses a serious challenge to thousands suffering from kidney disease, with patients spending an average of GHS8,400 monthly on treatment nearly 20 times the minimum wage.
Health Minister Mintah Kwabena Akandoh hailed Agongo’s gesture as a powerful act of solidarity. “This is Ghanaians standing for Ghanaians,” he said, calling the donation more than corporate social responsibility.
Launched under the “Mahama Cares” initiative, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is aimed at supporting low-income patients, the elderly, and unemployed persons struggling to access critical healthcare.
Alhaji Agongo, who also runs a dialysis centre and owns Agricult, called on other well-meaning citizens to show compassion and contribute to national wellbeing. “This is not about what we have, but about how deeply we care,” he said.
