President John Dramani Mahama has officially pardoned the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, following a viral video that showed him giving an undisclosed sum of U.S. dollars to popular evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, also known as Nana Agradaa.

The footage sparked public outcry, with civil society organizations and opposition lawmakers calling for Gyamfi’s dismissal, citing possible breaches of the Foreign Exchange Act and the Code of Conduct for Public Officers. Critics argued that the gesture undermined public trust and raised questions about financial propriety within government institutions.

Despite the backlash, President Mahama has decided not to pursue disciplinary action. At a press briefing on May 14, Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced that the President had accepted Gyamfi’s apology and deemed the matter resolved.

“The President believes the incident is regrettable,” Kwakye Ofosu said, “but he has chosen to accept Mr. Gyamfi’s apology and has issued a firm warning not only to him but to all public appointees to strictly comply with ethical standards moving forward.”

The President’s decision has triggered mixed reactions. While some observers have welcomed the move as a pragmatic step to de-escalate political tensions, others have condemned it as a failure to uphold accountability in public service.

Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, CEO of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), publicly defended the decision, describing Gyamfi’s action as a gesture of kindness rather than impropriety. He urged the public to move on, stating, “The matter is dead and gone, let us all allow it to die.”

President Mahama has reiterated his administration’s commitment to ethical governance, warning that future breaches of conduct will not be tolerated
