Sammy Gyamfi, Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board and National Communications Officer of the NDC, has disclosed that a major illegal mining (galamsey) kingpin and his associates will be arrested in the coming days.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Gyamfi said the government’s ongoing crackdown on galamsey operations is set to reach a critical milestone with the imminent arrest of one of the most influential figures in the illegal mining network.

“I have good news for you—mark my words—within the next few days, one of the biggest galamsey kingpins and his collaborators will be arrested,” he stated confidently.

Gyamfi highlighted the successes achieved by the current administration in reclaiming forest reserves previously devastated by illegal mining. He noted that seven out of nine red-zone forest reserves have been nearly restored following intensive anti-galamsey operations.

As part of the crackdown, over 160 individuals have been arrested, and a significant amount of equipment used in illegal mining activities—including 125 excavators, 10 bulldozers, seven pick-up vehicles, and 50 motorbikes—has been seized.

He contrasted the NDC-led efforts with the previous government, criticizing the NPP for alleged mismanagement, including missing excavators and unaccounted-for anti-galamsey drones.

“You haven’t heard of excavators going missing under our watch, or drones purchased with taxpayers’ money disappearing. We are serious about ending illegal mining,” Gyamfi stressed.
