Ghana’s legal community is mourning the passing of retired Supreme Court Justice Nasiru Sulemana Gbadegbe, who died on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at the age of 74 following a brief illness.
Justice Gbadegbe, known for his integrity, legal intellect, and strict adherence to due process, served on Ghana’s Supreme Court from 2009 until his retirement on December 8, 2020, after reaching the constitutional retirement age of 70.
His distinguished judicial career began in 1989 as a High Court judge. He later served on the Court of Appeal from 1999 to 2009 before being elevated to the Supreme Court. Over more than three decades, he became widely respected for his principled judgments and unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
A highlight of his career came when he sat on the panel of justices that adjudicated the historic 2012/2013 presidential election petition — a landmark moment that tested the resilience of Ghana’s democracy.
Colleagues and legal scholars often described him as a “stickler for procedure,” with a deep respect for legal ethics and constitutional governance. His opinions on the bench were known for their clarity, fairness, and legal precision.
At his retirement, then Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah described him as “a pillar of judicial excellence” whose work left an indelible mark on Ghana’s justice system.
