ASEPA Petitions Mahama for Removal of Auditor General Akuamoah Asiedu

The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has officially petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to initiate constitutional proceedings for the removal of Auditor General, Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu.

The petition, submitted on April 3, 2025, at Jubilee House in Accra, accuses Mr. Asiedu of high crimes, misconduct, abuse of office, and violations of the Constitution. ASEPA invokes Article 187(13) of the 1992 Constitution, which governs the process for removing the Auditor General.

ASEPA’s petition highlights several key allegations, including:

1. Failure to comply with Supreme Court directives, which ASEPA claims constitutes a high crime under Article 2(4) of the 1992 Constitution.
2. Collusion with the Audit Service Board to undermine Parliament’s authority, violating Article 187(15).
3. Unlawful retention of public funds, in contravention of Section 17(2) of the Audit Service Act.
4. Abuse of discretionary powers and alleged cover-ups, contrary to Article 296 of the Constitution.

ASEPA’s Executive Director, Mr. Mensah Thompson, emphasized the seriousness of the accusations, stating that the petition sets in motion the constitutional process for the Auditor General’s removal—one similar to the removal of a Chief Justice under Article 146.

“This petition marks the beginning of a crucial constitutional process aimed at ensuring accountability and upholding the integrity of our institutions,” Mr. Thompson stated.
