Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has reiterated his stance on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the job market, predicting that AI will eventually replace humans in most tasks. However, he emphasized that certain professions will remain reliant on human expertise despite technological advancements.

Gates, who has been vocal about AI’s transformative potential since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022, believes that while AI will surpass human capabilities in many areas, there are still fields where human intervention is irreplaceable. Speaking on the subject, he highlighted three professions where AI will serve as a tool rather than a replacement.

According to Gates, biologists will continue to play a crucial role in scientific research. While AI can assist in disease diagnosis and DNA analysis, it lacks the creativity needed to drive scientific discoveries. He also noted that energy experts will remain indispensable due to the complexity of the energy sector, which cannot be fully automated.

His comments come amid concerns that AI will lead to widespread job displacement. Several tech leaders, including NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang and OpenAI’s Sam Altman, have suggested that coding and software development may be among the first fields to be fully automated. However, Gates argues that human oversight and expertise will still be required, particularly in scientific and engineering domains.

With AI evolving at an unprecedented pace, many industries are experiencing a shift in the way work is conducted. While automation may eliminate some roles, Gates’ perspective suggests that professions requiring deep human insight, creativity, and problem-solving will remain secure for the foreseeable future.
