Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Assin Central MP and 2024 NPP presidential aspirant, has urged urgent decongestion of Kantamanto Market to prevent future fire outbreaks.
During a tour on March 28, 2025, Agyapong highlighted the overcrowded conditions that pose serious fire hazards, stressing that the lack of space hinders emergency response.
“The congestion here is a ticking time bomb. We need to create space to allow for easy accessibility of fire tenders,” he warned.
He appealed to traders to cooperate in making the market safer. However, when he attempted to donate money to the traders, they rejected the gesture, instead demanding practical support like streetlights and improved security.
Traders accused the market leadership of mismanaging past donations, though Michael Oppong, Chairman of the Kantamanto Used Clothing Association, defended the leadership, stating funds were used for market reconstruction.
Agyapong’s call for action underscores the need for collaboration between traders, leadership, and authorities to ensure the market’s safety and organization.
