Real Madrid secured their spot in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16 second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Atletico got off to a flying start, with Conor Gallagher scoring just 27 seconds into the match, overturning Real Madrid’s first-leg advantage. However, Vinícius Júnior missed a golden opportunity to level the score when he blasted a 70th-minute penalty over the crossbar, keeping Atletico ahead.

With the aggregate score tied at 2-2, the match proceeded to extra time and then penalties. The shootout was filled with drama, including Julian Alvarez’s disallowed penalty, ruled out by VAR after he inadvertently touched the ball twice following a slip.

The victory sets up a blockbuster quarter-final clash between Real Madrid and Arsenal. Elsewhere in the draw, Aston Villa—playing in their first-ever Champions League quarter-finals—will take on Paris Saint-Germain. Barcelona will face Borussia Dortmund, while Bayern Munich go up against Inter Milan in another heavyweight showdown.
