The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council has announced its intention to petition the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, following alleged derogatory remarks made by Tamale Central MP, Hon. Murtala Mohammed, about the late Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah.

The council expressed displeasure over claims that Hon. Mohammed described Dr. JB Danquah as a “traitor” and a “CIA operative,” considering Dr. Danquah’s pivotal role in Ghana’s independence struggle.

During an interview with Channel One News after a libation ceremony at Dr. Danquah’s grave in Kyebi, Osabarima Okogyeaman Apagya Fori IV, Kyebi Apapamuhene and warlord of Akyem Abuakwa, confirmed plans to present the petition to Speaker Bagbin on March 7.

“We are here to show our concern to the Speaker that someone has insulted our beloved JB Danquah despite his contributions to the nation. He doesn’t deserve that. We have poured libation and tomorrow, we will send our petition,” Osabarima Apagya Fori IV stated.

The youth of Okyeman have also rallied behind the traditional council, demanding a retraction and an unqualified apology from Hon. Murtala Mohammed.

“We, the youth of Okyeman, are displeased with the comments. We are asking Hon. Murtala Mohammed to retract the derogatory remark and apologize to the people of Akyem Abuakwa, JB Danquah’s family, and the nation as a whole,” they said.

The traditional council and the youth believe that Dr. JB Danquah’s legacy as a founding father and a key figure in Ghana’s independence movement should be respected and protected from defamatory statements.
