The United States has removed Ghana and several other African nations from the 2025 Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), a scheme that allows visa-free travel for short visits.

While the United Kingdom has also been excluded from the general list, it remains eligible under specific conditions.

The 2025 VWP welcomes Romania as a new participant while largely maintaining its existing list of 40 eligible countries.

According to the US Bureau of Consular Affairs, the VWP permits citizens of participating nations to visit the US for up to 90 days for tourism or business without a visa. However, travelers must obtain prior approval through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) and meet all security requirements.

The US government has emphasized enhanced security checks and prioritized countries with strong diplomatic ties and robust border security in its selection process.

Despite Ghana’s removal from the program, Ghanaian travelers can still apply for visitor visas to enter the United States.
