Brazilian football icon Marcelo has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36. The legendary left-back, regarded as one of the most decorated players in history, earned 58 caps for Brazil and enjoyed a remarkable club career.

Marcelo began his journey at Fluminense before joining Real Madrid in 2007 at just 18 years old. Over 15 years at the Bernabéu, he won 25 major trophies, including five Champions League and six La Liga titles.

Reflecting on his career, Marcelo said in a heartfelt message:
“At 18, Real Madrid knocked on my door, and now I can proudly say that I am a true Madrileño. Sixteen seasons, 25 titles, five Champions Leagues—what a journey!”

In 2021, he made history as Real Madrid’s first non-Spanish captain in 117 years. Club president Florentino Pérez hailed him as “one of the greatest left-backs in world football.”

After leaving Madrid in 2022, Marcelo briefly played for Olympiacos before returning to Fluminense in 2023. He made 68 appearances for his boyhood club before mutually parting ways last November.

While his playing career ends, Marcelo hinted at remaining in football, saying: “I still have so much to give.”
