A group of aggrieved youth, believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), assembled at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) headquarters to protest the appointment of Anthony Sarpong as Acting Commissioner-General.
The demonstration follows President John Dramani Mahama’s announcement on January 21 appointing Mr. Sarpong to the pivotal role responsible for managing Ghana’s tax collection and revenue mobilization efforts.
Mr. Sarpong, a highly regarded accountant and auditor, previously held the position of Senior Partner at KPMG, a leading global auditing and consulting firm. His appointment has been widely viewed as a strategic move to strengthen Ghana’s revenue systems amidst economic challenges and fiscal pressures.
However, some members of the NDC have opposed the decision, alleging that Mr. Sarpong has ties to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). Protesters argue that his perceived affiliation with the opposition could undermine the government’s revenue agenda and weaken the ruling party’s influence in key institutions.
The demonstrators have called on President Mahama to rescind the appointment, claiming it compromises the party’s interests at a time when unity and loyalty are critical.
