President John Dramani Mahama has directed the redistribution of food supplies initially procured for drought relief to senior high schools across the country, aiming to alleviate the ongoing food shortages in educational institutions.
Speaking at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), on Sunday, January 12, 2025, the President emphasized the urgency of ensuring students receive adequate meals.
“I have asked the Chief of Staff to work with the GES to allocate and evacuate food that is currently in warehouses in Tema. This food was imported by the outgone government in response to the drought that occurred last year, but in this emergency, we need to use some of that food to feed our students,” President Mahama stated.
The food supplies, stored in warehouses in Tema, were initially earmarked for drought-affected communities. However, the government’s decision to repurpose them underscores its commitment to addressing critical issues within the education sector, particularly challenges linked to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program.
This move comes amid growing concerns about the sustainability of the Free SHS initiative, with persistent food shortages threatening the well-being of students nationwide.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the intervention, though they have called for long-term solutions to ensure consistent and sustainable funding for the program. The redistribution of food is expected to provide temporary relief as the government explores more comprehensive measures to resolve the crisis.
