President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to investigate the finances surrounding the controversial National Cathedral Project, initiated by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a Christian worship center and symbol of Ghana’s religious heritage.
The project, marred by allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement, has sparked nationwide debate over its necessity and funding amid the country’s economic struggles.
Speaking at a Christian National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Sunday, January 12, 2025, President Mahama questioned the fiscal rationale behind the $400 million initiative.
“On the vexed issue of the National Cathedral, CHRAJ directed the government to audit the project and investigate any misuse of public funds. We will soon activate an investigation into the project,” Mahama stated.
The president also highlighted the stark cost disparity, comparing it to Nigeria’s National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, which reportedly cost $30 million. “In the current circumstances that Ghana is going through, it makes no sense to achieve such a project at a whopping sum of $400 million,” he remarked.
