The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has provided a detailed breakdown of the substantial debt owed by McDan Aviation, which led to the closure of its private jet terminal at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on Monday, December 30, 2024.

The debt, amounting to $3,995,622.66 and GHS 13,523.37, includes unpaid fees for land leases, terminal rents, and other associated charges. Despite repeated notices and a December 25, 2024 deadline for settlement, the payments remain outstanding.

A breakdown of the arrears includes:

  • Terminal 1 Rent and Fees: $640,232.48
  • Block Factory, Spintex Road (5.66 acres): $1,160,827.23
  • Airport Logistics Building, Spintex Road (10.63 acres): $2,168,266.75
  • Courier Enclave (0.59 acres): $8,140
  • Cargo Village Offices: $18,156.20 (GHS 13,523.37)

Additionally, McDan Aviation owes GACL 15% of gross revenue from monthly operations between September 1, 2022, and November 30, 2024, which remains unpaid.

McDan Aviation has contested portions of the debt, arguing that $2 million relates to a disputed land acquisition currently under litigation. Despite this, GACL pointed out that McDan has developed the said land with commercial buildings and is benefiting from rental proceeds without paying ground rent to GACL.

According to GACL, McDan Aviation paid GHS 2 million on December 24, 2024, as part of the outstanding amount. However, prior payment plans proposed by McDan in 2020 were not honored, prompting GACL to insist on full payment.

“It is worthy to note that while McDan claims some of the lands are under litigation, the company has developed these lands for commercial purposes and has yet to pay the required ground rent,” GACL stated.

The GACL maintains its stance that all outstanding debts must be cleared, highlighting that the decision to close the private jet terminal was necessitated by McDan Aviation’s prolonged non-compliance with payment obligations.
